Gruene

The Guadalupe River is also not far from the historic town of Gruene, TX. Gruene is a town with incredible history which begins in 1872 when a German farmer by the name of Heinrich (Henry) D. Gruene purchased 6,000 acres of farmland North of New Braunfels. The town of Gruene was able to open a mercantile store to serve the sharecroppers on his land. The store began to thrive because of the beneficial location along the stagecoach route. Like many Gruene suffered from the Great Depression. By 1950 it was a ghost town. Gruene,Tx made a comeback in the early 1970s. The Gruene Family Home still exists as well as many other restored buildings such as the Gruene Hall. Other buildings there have been renovated into shops and restaurants for tourists to enjoy. There you can find vacation souvenirs and fill up before you float at the Gristmill, a popular restaurant.
